Organic compounds found in essential oils are used in the process of aromatherapy as the scents emitted from those compounds seem to have a certain effect on a person’s mood and mental/emotional well-being. There are various methods for using essential oils for aromatherapy as well. The important thing is to find the scent or the combination of scents that can relax and calm you down effectively. This tends to vary from person to person.

Due to the ability of essential oils and their organic compounds to actually affect the mood and mental state of the person, aromatherapy has been used as a natural alternative for managing depression symptoms as well. Essentially, the said compounds trigger smell receptors which then affect the brain. Of course, there’s plenty of work to be done when it comes to proper research on how exactly aromatherapy helps with depression treatment. However, the research done so far has definitely found a link between the two. Still, it’s rather obvious that aromatherapy cannot be a stand-alone solution for proper depression treatment and management.

In general, the most common essential oils that are used in aromatherapy sessions with the aim to affect and improve one’s mood include:

  • lavender
  • chamomile
  • jasmine
  • sandalwood
  • basil
  • geranium
  • neroli
  • bergamot
  • rose
  • petitgrain
  • ylang-ylang
  • clary sage

As mentioned, there are different ways for people to utilize the power of essential oils and their organic compounds that can better someone’s emotional and mental well-being. Still, it’s important to note that the best results will be obtained with pure organic essential oils, regardless of the method used for them to release the scent. Basically, artificial scents are far less effective compared to pure essential oils.

Diffusers are the easiest way to spread the scent of essential oils all over your home. They are definitely one of the most popular options out there, as they are available in a huge range of different designs and styles. In the end, a modern diffuser can be a true accessory and even a statement piece in your home.

Room sprays are also very effective in spreading the scent across your home, especially if you opt for the automatic ones. However, they may not fit your décor aesthetic. While there are plenty of designs to choose from these days, it’s important to make sure that you find your personal environment pleasant in order to get true comfort at home.

Scented candles are an obvious favorite for many people. Still, they don’t last as long as other methods, mostly because it’s also fun and relaxing to just have them burn all the time – not to mention the actual scent. That said, shop smart and get wholesale candles for cheaper to stock up, if you know this method works wonders for you.

Massages are a great way to pamper yourself, especially after a long day. In that sense, essential oils can be effective when used on their own or with other massage oils to help you relax.

Just like with massage oils, essential oils can be used together with bath and skincare products. That way, you’ll get the benefit of certain scent without stepping out of your daily routine.

As mentioned, certain scents can be very soothing. The important thing is to find the scent(s) that work that way for you personally. After all, scents have the ability to calm someone down and even evoke past memories. However, it’s important to be careful when essential oils are concerned as well. Aromatherapy is not dangerous in general, but for people who are very sensitive to strong scents or allergic to certain essential oils, it could be. With that said, make sure to consult with your doctor and do a proper checkup before you immerse yourself into the scents that may end up bothering you.

Keep in mind that aromatherapy and essential oils cannot be a replacement for the actual medical treatment that a person may need when diagnosed with depression. It’s an effective solution for home relaxation but it should definitely be used together with other treatments that your doctor suggested for you specifically for the best results.
