Quick and Effective At-Home Stress Relievers

With all the deadlines and assignments that you have to do, with either your boss hovering somewhere over your head or your co-workers depending on how fast you do something, your workdays can cause so much stress, that it seems years, rather than hours, before you can finally go home. You get home and there’s your family, wondering why dinner is taking so long, why you bought strawberry ice cream instead of chocolate and fighting over who’s going to walk the pet. Before you lose all your nerves, turn to the nearest stress relievers, the ones that won’t cost you any extra money, because you can find them right there, in your home.

MEDITATION

One thing that you do while meditating is unburdening your mind of all the negative thoughts and mental noise, creating a sense of calmness, which is a great way of toning down or getting rid of stress. Meditation is something you can do anywhere and anytime, but just after you wake up or right before you go to bed is probably the best time. All you need is a quiet place and a cozy place to sit, where you can make yourself comfortable, close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing until your mind is clear.

MUSIC

It doesn’t matter if you have a presentation you’re nervous about, or you’re scared of going to the dentist. Wherever your stress is coming from, the right choice of music can help you chase it away. Of course, you won’t turn to fast and aggressive beats to soothe your mind. You should choose slower beats, whether it’s contemporary, classical or folk music. Not only can music help you relax and improve your mood, but it may also relieve you of headache pain, help you fall asleep and even lower your blood pressure.

A LONG BATH

Another way to relax at home is to take a nice, soothing bath. Apparently, our minds and bodies associate being in horizontal position with relaxation, while the warmth, isolation and comfort we feel while taking a bath also contribute to the calmness we want to achieve. Just fill your bath with warm water and add some essential oils or a bubble bath for some aromatherapy. You’ll feel relaxed and refreshed in no time.

A CUP OF TEA

Other than improving your immune system and reducing inflammation, a hot cup of herbal tea can do wonders for your frazzled nerves. Stress can lead to many physical problems, including digestive issues, increased heartbeat rate and insomnia, all of which can be helped with some well-chosen herbal tea, which can reduce stress and boost your mood. Chamomile, lemon balm and lavender are good for fighting stress, while valerian can help you sleep and ginseng can lift your spirits and increase your vitality.

LAUGHTER

When you’re under a lot of stress and somebody wants you to smile or laugh, you’ll probably think that it’s impossible. However, you should make an effort to laugh more, since it can make a huge difference in your overall attitude and mood. If you have friends with a good sense of humor, call them or spend some time with them. If they’re unavailable, watch a sitcom or some funny videos online. Your brain releases its stress-relieving hormones when you laugh, making you feel happier. Laughing can even improve your blood flow, which is a great addition to its stress reducing properties.

NAPS

When you feel like you’re going to burst with stress, leave whatever you’re doing and take a nap. When you’re under stress, your body uses large amounts of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that’s in charge of mood, sleep and appetite regulation. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression, leaving you irritable and overwhelmed, since stress blocks the production of the serotonin you desperately need. However, when you take a nap, your brain starts producing more serotonin, which cancels and reverses the effects of stress, giving you a more positive perspective. If you have time for it, your nap should ideally last about 90 minutes for you to feel renewed, cheerful and energetic.

CUDDLING

If you’re in a loving and healthy relationship, turn to your partner in times of stress. Yes, they can give you some advice, but they can also give you something to instantly lower your stress levels – a kiss or a hug. Cuddling, kisses and sex are known to help produce oxytocin, which is a hormone that boosts your happiness levels and relieves you of stress. It’s likely that these activities are on top of your list when it comes to enjoying yourself, so engage in them as often as possible to keep the anxiety and bad mood at bay.

Having the time and money for a weekend spa getaway is great, but otherwise, you can find some great ways to relax in the comfort of your own home as well. It won’t take too much time and it’s cost-free, but getting rid of stress can turn your day into something joyful and beautiful.
