How to Stay Positive in 2018

The new year is a new opportunity for you to set new goals and re-calibrate your path. And one thing you should make a priority at the start of every year is a positive mindset. Thinking positively will boost your productivity, improve your attitude and can even affect your physical health. But getting into a positive attitude – and especially keeping it – can be a hard thing, particularly when the troubles and stresses of daily life set in. So here are some tips to keep you smiling throughout the year:

FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS TO YOU

We all have different aspirations and goals in life, and following someone else’s steps is not the way to happiness. You need to make your own priority list and focus on that. Whether that means putting in the extra hours into your start-up or taking the time to visit your family every weekend, put your time and energy into the things that fulfill you. But while you are chasing your ambitions, you have to remember to maintain a balance between the different areas in your life. Even if you reach the top of the pyramid in one area of your life, if you are falling behind on other things because of it, you will feel pressured instead of happy. Be at peace with the fact that you only have so many hours in a day, and that the moment you accept you can’t have everything, you will realize that what you have is enough.

GET MOVING

If you want to be truly happy, you have to start thinking about your whole self – your body included. If you spend all of your time behind a screen or over paperwork, your mindset will reflect what your body is feeling. And what better way to move your body than to put on some music and move to the beat? Dancing combines emotions and movement in the best possible way. So make it a resolution to start dancing more! Whether that means blasting music in your bedroom or getting a pair of jazz dance shoes or signing up for a class. And if you think you’re too old to start dancing now – any instructor will tell you that it’s never too late to start! And if dancing isn’t your thing there are plenty of other ways to get your body moving!

BE GRATEFUL

Study after study continues to prove that expressing gratitude makes us feel better. So keep a gratitude log in a diary, tell the people around you how much you appreciate them and be grateful for everything you have. You will instantly feel more optimistic and positive – and the more you do it, the better you will feel. As the saying goes: gratitude turns what we have into enough. A good exercise to start with is asking yourself the question: “If I woke up tomorrow without all the things I wasn’t grateful for today, where would I be?”

PRACTISE SELF-CARE

You can’t be positive if you are not taking good care of yourself. This means getting enough sleep, taking time off when you need it, having a good diet and getting some exercise. Be kind to yourself, practice saying self-affirming sentences in front of a mirror and work on building your self-confidence. If you feel good, healthy, confident and loved, you will feel like you can take over the world and life will look a lot brighter. At the same time, leave all feelings of jealousy, pettiness, and anger in the past. Respond to everyone with love and kindness, because the words you send away will always come back to you.

Life is far from easy, but if you keep your head in the right place and face things with optimism, you will find that it’s not that difficult either. So many people have walked this Earth before us, and achieved all of their dreams and wishes, which is only proof that we can do it too. So get your chin up and own 2018 like the boss that you are.
