There is no quick trick to figuring out life.
Even without the politics and the problems that people impose upon themselves, the world is a complicated place. It’s difficult to get your head around it and human beings don’t have all that long to figure out their place in it all.
But while there is a lot of information that you just have to learn to live without, there are plenty of simple things that you can keep in mind to make everything a little easier to handle.
CLEAN AS YOU GO
Don’t leave yourself extra work to worry about later on. Future you will be grateful. Don’t get into a habit of putting things off that you know you’re capable of doing now. You’ll be more likely to grow idle and lazy if you don’t keep on top of things, less likely to be able to stop things spiralling out of control.
WRITE DOWN IMPORTANT THINGS
Facts, dates, plans, or maybe just words of advice. You won’t remember anywhere near as much as you expect to. The act of writing makes it easier to remember things and, if you forget anyway, you can always come back to your notes.
ASSUME THE BEST OF PEOPLE
It won’t always be true, but it will make your experience of the world a whole lot nicer. It’ll make it easier to be kind and empathetic and to be a force of goodness in society if you choose to believe that other people are inherently nice too.
NEVER STOP LEARNING
You don’t stop learning when you leave school. Every new experience and new interaction is an opportunity to learn about the world around you and every new thing life teaches you could be infinitely valuable.
MAKE TIME FOR YOUR HOBBIES
Life is stressful. Everyone needs to take some down time once in a while. If you have something you love doing, that inspires you and makes you feel at peace with the world, then it will only do you more good. Find something that you really enjoy doing and make an effort to incorporate it into your life.
IT CAN NEVER HURT TO DOUBLE CHECK
No matter how certain you are of something, you are human and you make mistakes. It’s going to be far less hassle to double check that your keys are actually in your bag than to call a locksmith to let you back into your house in the middle of the night. Take the time to be certain of things before you bet on them.
EXPERTS ARE EXPERTS FOR A REASON
That reason is that they know a lot about things. They dedicate their whole lives to studying something. If they’re offering advice, it’s based on a lifetime of research and study. Even if they don’t know everything, it’s safe to assume they know more than you. Listen to what they have to say. And remember that the times when you don’t like what they have to say are probably the times that you need them most.
